John Andre, Bessie's second husband, was a Baptist Minister. He came
from France, was a Catholic Priest or in training to be one, but left the
church and eventually became a Baptist minister. They built the church
at the corner of 14th Ave and 65th street, with their congregation.

I (Steve Shaffer) met Thelma in November or December of 1993 at Aunt
Vera's house in Sacramento. She had fond though limited memories of dad.
Vera Lindgren writes (7/96 letter to Steve Shaffer) that "Thelma Britten

Melva died in her early 20's.
Date of death given here as "1940" is approximate, maybe within a year or
two either way.
According to Patsy Lauder (former wife of Dick Britten, related to Ernest
John Britten, Sr., conversation with Steve Shaffer 7/4/96), Melva died
suddenly and suspiciously in her home in Berkeley. She was married to a
lawyer and some suspected that he may have killed her though the more
likely mode of death seems to have been suicide. She was found in the
basement of her home sometime within a couple of years after 1938.
(Patsy marked the date as a within a couple of years of her marriage in
1938.) Patsy did not remember Melva's husband's name.
[NI0177] Della had no children with either of her husbands.
