[NI0389] Michael Foraker was killed by a freight train on June 21, 1921. Newspaper accounts from the time differ from our family folklore. The family story is that Michael was visiting at Martin and Margaret's home one evening, then left to walk home. He cut through nearby railroad yards and was knocked down and run over when a stationary train he was moving through suddenly lurched. His legs were cut off and he died shortly after the injury. Michael was said by Mildred Foraker Shaffer to be her favorite uncle.

In a note written by Lois and marked "Info from Mildred 1/4/78" the following appears:
"Michael [Thompson] (stricken out) Foraker (per obituary) died in Denver run over by train around 1920. Late at night cut thru rail yards went between cars and the train was switching. Backed up or lurched. Caught between cars and knocked down train severed legs. Died shortly after. Buried in Denver. Happened in summer while Mother visiting Aunt Agnes." This raises the question of where Aunt Agnes lived at the time. Perhaps it wasn't Denver, but was Casper, Wyo?

The newspaper account from the Denver Post on Wednesday, June 22, 1921 reads (in its entirety) as follows:

"BOILERMAKER SLEEPS ON TRACK; FATALLY INJURED BY TRAIN
Casper, Wyo. June 22 - Michael Foreaker, a refinery boilermaker, went to sleep on the Northwestern railroad track here Tuesday night and was run down by a freight train and fatally injured. Both the man's legs were cut off."

A funeral notice from the same paper reads as follows:

"FORAKER - The funeral of Michael Foraker, brother of Martin Foraker, Peter Thompson, Mrs. Clarence Huck, Mrs. Bert Hooper, will take place from the Residence mortuary, Fourteenth and Glenarm, Sunday, at 1:30; Sacred Heart church at 2 p. m. Interment at Mt. Olivet. Direction Geo. Hackethal."

Michael was buried on June 26, 1921 in an unmarked grave at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 12801 West 44th Avenue, Wheatridge (Denver), Colorado. He is in Section 14, Block 12, Grave 72. His grave is two to the left of the one with the marker reading "Silas Sanville."

One further note: The burial record at Mt. Olivet shows Michael's age at the time of death as 35 years and gives a date of birth as 1886, not the 1884 we have recorded.

[NI0400] According to Vera Lindgren (Letter to Steve Shaffer 7/96), Donald "can be a very funny person and keep a room full of people laughing. He was in Hellen's class in high school. He now lives in Boise Idaho. His mother ... is Edna Costa. She lives in Sacramento."

[NI0413] According to the published obituary of John J. Kotowski, the Kotowski family (unknown husband, wife Josephine, and children John J., Peter, Frank [? born 1889]) immigrated from Poland in 1889, settling in the Denver area. Joseph, Andrew, and possibly Mary (birthdate unknown) were subsequently born in the Denver area.

[NI0414] The obituary for Fred, contained in one of Margaret Foraker's scrapbooks, indicates that he was 62 when he died but does not give either birth or death dates. He was a WWI veteran and lived in San Diego for since 1924.

[NI0560] Cameron is the author of the articles from the Detroit Genealogical Society Newsletter on "Four Generations of the Middagh Family in Perry County Ohio," from which we gleaned much valuable information about the early generations of the Shaffer family. He is an exceedingly nice and gracious man, happy to hear from others who have an interest in genealogy and a connection to the family.

Cameron is descendant from Joseph Shaver through Mary Shaver and William Spencer. He is, I believe, my (Steve Shaffer's) 5th cousin, being in the same generation as I am relative to our mutual great, great, great grandfather, Joseph.

Cameron said today (July 6, 1996) that he would send paper records on our common ancestors and their decedents, so I look forward to receiving a wealth of new information soon.

[NI0580] Struck by baseball and died at 15 yrs old.

[NI0582] Abstract of George Shaver's will (from McClenahen, Dan, Wills of Mifflin County):

SHAVER, George, Milford Twp., w. 3/20/1799, p. 8/11/1803, wife Margaret, son Joseph, daughters Hannah, Ann wife of Abner Beale, Catherine wife of Samuel Keever, Christiana wife of Thomas Hamlin, Betsy wife of William Beale Jr., grandchildren, John, Betsy, Samuel Stigers all children of Rudolph Stigers, Exec. Samuel Keever, & William Beale Jr. (Will Book 1)

In the 1790 census, one who appears to be our George Shaver, resident of that portion of Mifflin County south of the river Juniata, is head of a household which includes 8 individuals: 3 free white males of 16 years and upwards, 1 free white male under 16 years of age, and 4 free white females.

[NI0585] I (Steve Shaffer) spoke to Sophie on 7/4/96. She's a wonderful lady, also a genealogist, and as helpful as she can be with information. Email address: sophieb@theworks.com.
